Living in the city with six kids comes with its fair share of urban struggles. Top of my complaint list is parking – too-small spaces, expensive street spots, validation required for shopping. It is so annoying.
But, despite all the hassles city living with kids is awesome. The pleasantries far, far outweigh the frustrations. For example, last weekend I brought Evie, Vivian and a couple of their friends to see one of their favorite book characters come to life in “Junie B. Jones in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells” at the Emerald City Theatre (getting to the show could not have been easier – just a seven minute drive followed by an easy parallel parking job!). While it seems a bit hasty to attend a Christmas-themed play, the holidays are always such a rushed time of the year, so I was happy to take the girls now.
Ohmygosh the show is *adorable*! The actors bring the familiar characters to life in such charming ways – the actress who plays Junie B captivates the young audience with her energy and youthful spirit. She really is just too cute! Several times the girls laughed out loud (the show featured just the right amount of subtle adult humor to keep me laughing along with the kids), and not once did someone ask when the hour-long show was over. We loved it.
I am so grateful to live in a city so full of life and culture and different things to do. Most people think city living is not family friendly, but organizations like the Emerald City Theatre cater to kids in thoughtful and sophisticated and silly ways. We really live here.
After the show, the girls met the actors on stage to collect autographs and take photos. How sweet!
If you live near Chicago or are traveling here for the upcoming holidays, check out “Junie B Jones in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells!” at the Apollo Theater.
