My 18 month old son is officially no longer a baby.
He had his first haircut the other day.
Sniff, sniff.
Prior to the cut, he had long, wispy, baby curls circling the base of his head. In the sun, his hair – so blond its practically white – glowed like a holy halo. The untamed curls mirrored his curious and mischievous disposition, so I was nervous to chop them off; would his personality change along with his hairdo??
There are several kiddie hair salons in this city, but I was reluctant to bring Mack to any of them. He won’t sit still for much, and I had a sneaking suspicion that sitting in an unfamiliar place while an unfamiliar person handled his hair was a recipe for disaster. I had a very clear idea of how I wanted his hair to look, and I was worried a salon would give him a cookie-cutter style. Plus, they all cost more than $20 for simple haircut…more than I want to spend.
So, I opted for a homemade solution to Mack’s hair and bought a $10 pair of hair cutting scissors at Walgreen’s. My husband had some experience cutting friends’ hair in college and the Army, so I put him to work. The first several minutes went off without a hitch, but once Mack started getting antsy we turned on a cartoon for him.
As my husband said, Mack’s baby hair was so fine and thin that cutting it was like cutting spider webs. But, the final result was so cute – just what I had in mind for my little man! And, despite the haircut he’s still the adorable troublemaker he’s always been!

I’ve been thinking about a haircut for my 1 year old. My husband cuts his own hair, so maybe it’s time for the haircut. Thanks for posting this.
I opted to cut my son’s hair at home for the first time too a few months ago. I’m so glad I didn’t try to make him sit for a barber because it probably would have been a waste of money. Surprisingly, the second time I cut his hair was a lot harder than the first. I hope third time’s the charm.
I love this, b/c we too have a curly haired blondie with a wild mane that I (try!) to cut at home! Since his hair is thick and wavy, you usually can’t tell too much when I’ve hacked it. But I would love to learn how to cut it with a little more “style” – it sometimes ends up looking like a bowl cut! So if anyone has advice for an amateur, I would love it. 🙂
I have 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls. I have given all of them haircuts all of their lives. I have been married to my husband for 22 years and have also given him all his haircuts. I was a stay at home mom for 13 years and that’s one of the ways we could afford to do that. All kinds of little ways to save money!!
