Grow and Bloom

Tonight is our last night in our home.

After nearly four years and two more kids, we finally decided it was time to trade in our two-bedroom apartment downtown for something a little more spacious.  We decided to stay in the city, but we’re headed to a much more family-friendly neighborhood where we can get a little more space for our money.  It was a hard decision to make because we love living so close to everything this wonderful city offers.

When we first moved in, Evie was only 4 months old.  Although I didn’t always think so at the time, life was pretty easy.  During the days it was just me and my girl and our big city.  Evie was such a good baby, and I felt so light and free as I navigated the city sidewalks with my little bundle in her stroller.  This is the beautiful face I woke up to every morning.

Eighteen months later sweet little Mackie joined our family, and my mornings were even brighter.  He took no time making himself comfortable in our small home, and he did his best to keep up with his older sister.  Crawling at 6 months, charging up the stairs at 7 months, walking at 9 months. All of his “firsts” were in this apartment.

Just as life with two started to feel normal, we welcomed little Vivian to our family.  Her first night here was quiet and peaceful, a good sign of things to come with our fair angel.  However, we really started to feel squeezed for space once all the newborn stuff came out of hiding. I believe the best gift I can give my kids is a sibling, so we were more than thrilled to make room for another little miracle.

For the past couple weeks I’ve been saying gentle good-byes to the places and routines that made this apartment our home.  The other night the kids and I enjoyed homemade popsicles on the front steps of our building. Its one of my favorite summer activities – the kids release their last burst of energy and I don’t have to clean up a drippy mess. The other night I really savored the moment, knowing it would likely be the last time.  We love watching passerbys on the sidewalk…it is always so nice to chat with a friendly neighbor…watching boats float down the Chicago River is always an event…Evie and Mack love making friends with all the neighborhood dogs…

We love our neighborhood, but now it is time to spread our wings a bit.   As much as change challenges me, I know it can be good for the soul.

My little family will grow and bloom.  No matter where we lay our heads at night.

Good luck with the move and with settling into your new home and neighborhood!

I’m sure you’ll find some amazing adventures in the new ‘hood, and perhaps become a pro at riding the CTA with 3 kiddos in tow to explore areas that are no longer quite as close.
