Since Vivian was born six weeks ago we’ve been spending a little more time inside. I try to plan a fun activity every morning, but sometimes by the afternoon my energy is spent and I don’t feel like venturing out. I’ve been brainstorming quiet activities to do with Evie and Mack, and last week I thought it would be fun to take the kids fishing in our house. I cut silly fish shapes out of construction paper, and then the kids decorated their fish with crayons and Hello Kitty stickers. Evie was thrilled with this task – anytime she can exercise her creative spirit she is a happy girl.
Once Evie and Mack were happy with their creations, I slipped paper clip on one end of each.
To create the fishing pole, I strung twine on the end of a 12-inch ruler. To the end of the twine I taped a magnet I swiped from our fridge. The magnet operates as the “hook”, connecting with the paper clip and bringing the fish up.
We tossed a few fish behind the sofa, and Mack pretended the sofa was a dock. He dropped his line and caught a few, laughing with each success….I consider any activity that captures his attention for more than 15 minutes a success!

I”m having a pity party today. I tried this with my boys and all they did was throw the crayons around the room, then hit each other with the “poles”. What I’d give for a craft project to work out!
Poor Courtney! Those boys just won’t give you a break! If it makes you feel any better, after 15 minutes Mack was doing the same thing…but he hung with it for at least a little while 🙂
