Family Bike Ride

Last Saturday was a stunningly beautiful day – crisp blue sky, gentle sunshine, and a Caribbean blue lake. So, my little family of four hopped on bikes to take a tour of our pretty city and savor the summer weather. We rented the bikes for four hours, assuming we’d return them in two.
It was Evie and Mack’s first time riding bikes, and they loved every moment. We hooked their trailer to the back of Chris’ bike, and the first thing Evie did was grab Mack’s hand. She knew we were off for an adventure! We left our neighborhood and rode south along Lake Michigan. Mack dozed on and off while Evie took in the changing scenery. Before we knew it, an hour had passed!
We decided to stop for lunch in the neighborhood of Hyde Park (President Obama’s turf!). There are plenty of restaurants with outdoor seating, so we locked our bikes and took a break. All four of us were relaxed and calm. Evie didn’t seem to mind sitting still while we ate, and Mack smiled at and flirted with pedestrians walking by. Chris and I enjoyed fun conversation. I quietly considered how lucky I am to have such a sweet family.

Energized and excited, we got back on the bikes to head home. The fresh air and calming lake waters were restoring my spirit. And so many hours of peaceful and uninterrupted family time really connected all four of us. I felt lifted and new. What a rush!

We returned the bikes after four blissful hours and sixteen perfectly paced miles. The bike rental place, Bobby’s Bike Hike, sells all their bikes at the end of their season in October – I think I’m going to purchase two and the trailer!

What a great day! Hopefully this will be the beginning of many fun bicycle adventures.

When we visit Chicago, we spend a lot of time in Hyde Park (location of my husband's alma mater). Our favorite place is the Med Bakery on 57th Street — you should definitely visit if you haven't. I recommend the almond croissant and fruit turnovers.

Back to the bikes, were you able to buy them when the season ended like to planned? That can be a great way to get a decent bike at a good price.

Thanks for the tip, Melissa! I will add that bakery to our list of places to try. We love checking out new restaurants in cool neighborhoods!

We didn't get bikes this year because we're tight on space right now. I hope to get some next year when we (hopefully) have a little more room.
