Tonight Chris and I took the kids to a small fundraiser for City Farm, a one acre plot of vacant land in the middle of the city that otherwise would sit unused while waiting for development. Volunteers use the space in a productive and sustainable way, growing food for the community. I have driven by this property dozens of times, but I never thought to stop by.
The evening was wonderful. With a clear sky and temperature in the 80’s, it was a surprisingly mild and comfortable October night. We were surrounded by a sparkling and modern skyline, but nestled among lettuce leaves and pumpkins. Evelyn jumped in a pile of hay with other kids and danced to hillbilly music. Mack flirted with other guests, smiling the entire time even though we were out past his bedtime. Chris and I enjoyed beers while talking to other eco-minded Chicagoans.
Nights like this remind me how lucky I am to call Chicago home. I live in such a diverse and interesting place. While there are lots of times I yearn for a farmer’s life, its nice to know I can find my own pocket of green in this urban forest.
