Perhaps one of the best parts about living in the Midwest is easy access to farm fresh foods. My husband, an East coaster by birth, often reminds me that he considered Illinois a “fly over” state for much of his life, and I often remind him that my part of the country fed his uppity ass for the better part of his life, so it’s time for him to show a bit of gratitude. Ha!
Thanks to our location in the bread basket of America, Chicago has a vast and diverse array of farmers markets. There is at least one open every day of the week May-October, so we’re never in short supply of seasonal produce and pasture-raised meats. The market in our neighborhood is open on Saturdays, and every week we visit the same farmers. This week, we brought home lettuce, strawberries, cucumbers (for sorta-homemade pickles) and pierogi from a favorite Polish bakery. And, as always, the kids have to pick up smiley face cookies from Provo’s Bakery.
When we head out to the farmers market we are always sure to bring along a stash of reusable bags. As I wrote about earlier this month, I love the reusable produce sacks from Flip & Tumble, but I’m also quite fond of Flip & Tumble’s 24/7 bag for hauling all our goodies home. It is roomy and durable, and once I’m done it rolls up into a lightweight compact ball. I always have one in the stroller for last-minute trips to the grocery store (or farmers market!).
Because the Flip & Tumble 24/7 bags roll up so nicely, it is infinitely easier to always have one stashed in a purse/stroller/car. It is made of ripstop nylon, so it’ll last long enough to save at least 1,000 plastic bags from the landfill. Plus, once/if it does break, you can send it back to Flip & Tumble and they will recycle it. Love this company!!
