A Colorful Sunday

After another long Chicago winter, the city seems to be waking up again. Colorful tulips line city streets and parks – I really appreciate all the effort that goes in to making our city look so great. The other day I was chatting with a few tourists who asked me if the tulips are up “year ’round.” I couldn’t help but laugh as I reminded them that the average temperature in January doesn’t even reach 30 degrees!

Today was a lovely spring Sunday. We started off with a walk along Chicago’s lakefront to support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. If you’d like to make a donation to the cause, please click here. It was encouraging to see so many people (and dogs!) out early on a Sunday morning for such a worthy organization.

After the three mile charity walk we headed towards home. Just as we were approaching our building Evelyn remembered her bubbles in the stroller. She looked at me with her big blue eyes and pleaded: “Bubbles! Bubbles!” So, instead of heading in we ventured further out to enjoy a few minutes of bubble blowing together. But, a few minutes happily turned into the rest of the morning. I also had a box of sidewalk chalk hiding in the stroller, so I took that out and we colored along the Chicago River. I taught Evelyn a few new colors – she now recognizes blue and yellow – and I drew five flowers so we also practiced counting. The sun was shining and birds were chirping – a beautiful spring day!

Evelyn wants to learn all the time, and she is so proud when she starts to understand something new. For example, today she taught herself to hang and swing from a handrail, a trick she kept busy with for quite a while! She was smiling and laughing, thrilled with her new found strength and abilities. I clapped and encouraged her to keep at it. Such a big girl now!

Days like today remind me how much I love being a mom. I’ll forever remember coloring with Evelyn while the sun sparkled on the river. Little Mack was snoozing in the stroller, occasionally opening his eyes and admiring the sights around him. This precious moment in time didn’t cost me anything more than a 79 cent bottle of bubbles, but it will a favorite memory for the rest of my life. I am truly blessed.
