Simple Storage Solution

As I’ve written about countless times before, I really hate plastic. And I especially hate storing food in plastic. All those questionable chemicals leeching into lovely leftovers? No thanks!

I have a nice collection of glass storage containers – my favorite are Frigoverre ones that come in plenty of shapes and sizes. I also hang on to sturdy glass containers that are used to package foods I buy at the grocery store. But, sometimes the best food storage solution is the easiest. Instead of dirtying another container or using wasteful products like plastic wrap or aluminum foil, I just store the food in the dish it was prepared in and top it with a plate. Not only does this method keep my food fresh, but its one less bowl to clean. Oh, and its 100% plastic free!!!

Wondering what’s inside the bowls shown in the photo above?

A lovely batch of homemade buttercream frosting! This morning while Mack napped Evie and I took a cue from her favorite new book Pinkalicious and we made cupcakes together. I don’t yet know what I’ll do with the leftover frosting, but I’m guessing I’ll come up with something before the weekend comes to an end!

Plenty of homemade macaroni & cheese! This is Evelyn’s favorite lunch, and making it from scratch really doesn’t take much more time than the boxed version. It really is such a treat.

Peeled tomatoes. At Tuesday’s farmer’s market a vendor was selling a big basket of soft and dinged tomatoes for just $2. They looked bright and red and tasty, so I bought them. Once home, I brought a large pot of water to a boil, cut an “X” on the bottom of each tomato, dropped them in the water for 2 minutes, then put them in an ice water bath. Once they were cooled, they were very easy to peel. I used them the other night as a base for stuffed peppers, and I think I’ll use the leftover ones in the fridge in Sunday’s dinner of sopa de lima, our favorite Mexican chicken soup.

I love your website! I just found it and can’t get enough of your articles and advice 🙂

So you have any ideas for storing in the freezer? We like to make extra batches to store and I don’t have a practical and inexpensive alternative to plastic bags/containers (yuck).

Welcome to Homemade Mothering, Amber! SO glad you are here 🙂

So I know this is a big “no-no”, but I freeze foods in glass ALL THE TIME and I have never had any problem (I even froze homemade baby food in re-used glass baby food jars!). I am always careful to leave plenty of room at the top of the container so the food has space to expand as it freezes. And, when it is time to eat the food I thaw it slowly on the countertop or fridge (never put a glass jar of frozen food directly into a microwave or oven).

Good luck and have fun in the kitchen!!
