For the most part, I’m a fairly no-frills kind of girl. Yes, I wear make-up every day and I like nice clothes, but my hair is always up in a ponytail and I don’t take the time to accessorize. I’m certainly not as glamorous as my sister Colleen – her outfits are always so chic and her nails are always perfectly manicured. On the other hand, I haven’t worn nail polish in almost three years!
Evie always admires her Aunt Colleen’s perfectly polished nails. She comments on the ever-changing colors and perfect shine. I know Evie dreams about her own painted nails! But, as a Homemade Mother I am quite leery of the spooky chemicals lurking in most nail polishes. Its one of the reasons I won’t wear it myself.
So, I was thrilled to find Piggy Paint on ecomom.com – it claims to be safe as mud, with no toxic chemicals (its free of formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, Bisphenol A, ethyl acetate and acetone). It was a lot of fun to put on, but it chipped off within a day. That didn’t really bother me, though, because for me it just means we don’t have to eventually take it off and for Evie it means that she can apply another color.
Ecomom.com recently sent me a sample of Priti NYC Polish to try, and I am super impressed. Just like Piggy Paint, Priti NYC polishes are all completely non-toxic and made without toluene, dibutyl phthalate (DHB) and formaldehyde – all known carcinogenic ingredients. The color is shiny and bright, and so far it has lasted through a day of playing with toys, washing hands and eating meals. I’ve caught Evie admiring her fancy pink nails several times.
My little girl starts school tomorrow. I am so excited for her – she is a very social and cheerful person, and I know she will make friends and have fun. She is a bit nervous, though. I can tell she is feeling anxious about me leaving her behind. I told her that if she’s feeling sad tomorrow to look at her nails and remember the nice time we had together painting them. I hope she knows I love her always.

I have many bottles of Piggy Paint and they all chip off within hours of applying them. I called them and they sent me for free a top coat and base coat to apply to help it adhere to my daughter’s nails. Still chips off. The only thing it does is make the bits that do stay on so difficult to remove. Will give the Priti polish a try. 🙂
Do you put it on right before bed? The longer it has to cure without having water or touching anything the longer it will last.
Another brand to try is Honeybee Gardens.
Thanks for the suggestion – I’ll check out Honeybee Gardens next time!
I loved your suggestion to Evie to look at her pretty pink nails while at school if she starts to miss you! Reminds me of the book, The Kissing Hand.
I can’t wait to try this nail polish with my daughter. Have you seen this amazing hair tip? I haven’t worn a pony tail since I saw this on another blog. http://blogs.babble.com/babys-first-year-blog/2011/08/31/the-busy-mom-hair-trick-that-changed-my-life/ I tried it out and loved the results so much http://munchkiesmama.blogspot.com/2011/09/new-nonmom-do.html
OMG I just watched the video and I can’t wait to try this TONIGHT!! Thank you for giving me an option other than a ponytail!!!! 🙂
This post is fantastic timing – I’ve been thinking about nail polish of late and if I can find something better than what’s out there in the retail world (for both me and my little one). Having gone through college with acrylics (and I will admit to missing them more than once – they looked sooooo good), I did learn that polish on natural nails is more inclined to chip b/c of the natural oils, so it’s possible that some of those chemicals that are put in help keep the oils from affecting the look (and hence the likelihood for the Piggy Paint to chip more quickly). Thank you for the tip – I’ll be looking into this very soon! 🙂
