Just One? Not Quite.

I KNEW it. I knew all along it was twins. From the moment I found out I was pregnant, I knew it. Just ask Chris if you don’t believe me! This pregnancy felt different from day one – I found out I was pregnant weeks earlier than I did with the other four, I’m more exhausted, I started showing much sooner. At each doctor appointment I asked the doctors if they were sure just one baby was growing inside. Yes, they assured me, just one.

A few weeks ago we found out the gender thanks to a simple blood test. The results of that test reassured us that there were no genetic abnormalities detected, and it also said that the number of fetuses detected was ONE. Just one. So I quieted my intuition and sorta forgot about twins.

When I went in for my 20 week ultrasound earlier this week, I wasn’t expecting much excitement. Chris was busy at work so he didn’t come. I let Evie tag along as I thought it would be a good learning experience for a young girl. The moment the tech placed the transducer on my stomach she very matter of factly stated, “Oh, so its twins.”

What?! It was supposed to be just one!

My mind raced while Evie jumped for joy. Twins. Twins? Twins!

I’ve spent the past few days laughing out loud about this sudden change of plans – it is just too crazy, too wild, too unbelievable, too beautiful! In truth, I’ve also spent some of the past few days crying: so much has to change and so much work lies ahead for me. Just one baby is a lot of work – I can’t imagine life with two. I am scared.

But, inevitably our family of six now becomes a family of EIGHT. We told the kids the big news, and they were all quite excited. For them, the concept of twins has been both foreign and fascinating. And now they are lucky enough to have not just one, but TWO!, new sisters. We all better get used to it!

How exciting! At least you found out now…I am a twin, and my mom found out when they said, there’s another one here (after I was delivered)! She said she thought it was twins and kept asking the doctor. Of course this was before ultrasounds. But the doctor insisted it was only one.

Thank you for reaching out! I worry that twins will be harder for me because I’ve already had four singletons. I know how to care for one baby at a time, but two si new territory! Your offer of support is very much appreciated. I’m sure I’ll be reaching out soon (and often!).
