Intrigued!

Saw this article on-line and I must say that I am intrigued:

I have switched to fragrance-free, paraben-free shampoo and conditioner from Whole Foods, but part of me sorta kinda maybe wants to ditch it all cold turkey. I’ve always wondered how women kept their hair looking decent before modern hair care, and the theory presented in the article sure does make sense. The only thing stopping me from going shampoo-free is the 2-6 weeks of hell on my hair while my body adjusts to this new method! I’m gonna think this one over…

Have you thought about tapering off instead of quiting cold turkey? Since you already wash every other day, you could go to once every three days for a few weeks, then once every four, etc. This might make the adjustment a bit easier to manage and you hair could slowly acclimate to less shampooing. Just a thought. =) I’m intrigued as well, let me know how it goes if you do it. For me, shampooing and showering in general is such a daily relaxing treat! I don’t know if I could give that up.

Just an update to the no shampoo link I sent a month ago…

I was brave and I decided to take the plunge and go "poo-free". My hair has never been better!! Seriously!!

For the first two weeks I used shampoo once or twice a week (down from every day). My hair was looking pretty bad and I almost gave up.

After two weeks, I started rinsing my hair with a mixture of 2 tablespoons of baking soda & two cups of warm water. I found a suggestion on-line to rinse with 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar to help detangle.

I haven't used traditional shampoo for a few weeks now, but my hair just doesn't get greasy anymore. I do the baking soda rinse twice a week when it looks like my hair needs a little pick-me-up.

I never had a transition time. I had been using AC vinegar instead of conditioner for a few months and once I finished up my bottle of shampoo I switched right to baking soda and never looked back. It was fine from the beginning. I recommend just giving it a try!

Maureen, Have you not had trouble with the hard water in Chicago with going ‘poo free? I have tried for 8 months and haven’t been successful. It works well for a couple weeks after I have spent a week or so somewhere where the water is soft. But, then, I come back to Chicago water and I end up a greaseball again! I really want it to work!

Molly, I have had issues. I don’t go poo-free all the time. I go back & forth between baking soda/apple cider vinegar and conventional shampoo with jojoba oil for a light leave-in conditioner. The hard water here does make it hard to get all the grease out, and sometimes the resulting build-up requires shampoo or a shampoo bar to get the job done.

At the end of my most recent poo-free stint (lasted about 3 months) I went in for a hair cut. The hairdresser asked me “What products do you use on your hair? It is so healthy!” I think she was a little shocked when I revealed I was using nothing more than baking soda and vinegar!!
