Breastfeeding is important to me and my family.  When Evelyn was born nearly four years ago I made a commitment to nurse her for a year, and it became such a normal part of our routine that I couldn’t imagine doing anything different with Mack and now with Vivian.  Much to my delight, the first few weeks of nursing Vivian has been a breeze compared to Evelyn and Mack.  Its nice to finally feel like I know what I’m doing.  Third times the charm!

Just before Vivian was born my sister gave me her unused stash of disposable nursing pads, and yesterday I used the last pair.  I could very easily walk two blocks to the local grocery store to buy another box, but I thought I’d try making my own instead.  Throwing dozens of pads into the garbage (and eventually the landfill) was really bumming me out, and I always enjoy trying a homemade version of anything I can buy in store.

So, I re-purposed a Swaddlebees diaper changing pad that I never used.  One side was a waterproof fabric and the other side seemed absorbent and soft.  I traced circles with a glass, cut them out and crudely hand-sewed the layers together.  I made six pads, and from start-to-finish the project took me about 45 minutes. Mack and Vivian were napping, and Evie was working on a craft project…so I sat with her and worked on a craft project of my own.

I will not pretend to think that these nursing pads are the least bit elegant or fancy.  But, the only other human who will see them is too little to care so I won’t care either!
