Taking a FB Break + Orange Tumeric Smoothie

Ugh. This past week since the presidential election has been such a drag. Regardless of where you sit on the political spectrum, all the hate and vitriol and negativity from both sides must be bringing you down. Right?

It has been a week since I’ve checked Facebook. All the political rants and name calling were just too much for me so I’m taking a break. And, you know what? I don’t miss it. Like, not even a little bit. While I miss seeing pictures of my friends’ kids and vacations, I 1: actually feel a bit lighter now that I don’t have to bear witness to the (usually trivial) burdens of casual acquaintances (not to belittle people’s problems, but I’d like to spend more time understanding the challenges facing my large family and my diverse community). 2: I don’t have to roll my eyes at people grandstanding from the comfort of their smart phones (guess what: if you want to effect change, you have to get off your butt and actually do something). 3: My feelings aren’t hurt anymore (because I don’t see photographic evidence of social outings I wasn’t at or invited to). And, 4: I have more free time…

…free time to do little things I’ve wanted to do for a while. Like coloring, which has turned out to be something pleasant I can do while sitting on the floor with the kids. They gather ’round and ask for a page from my grown-up coloring book. We chat about their days and, for a little while at least, everyone is quiet and content. It is a nice way to spend free time I thought I never had.

The other morning I woke up too early. Rather than kill time in bed checking FB on my phone, I tiptoed downstairs, fixed myself a healthy anti-inflammatory breakfast smoothie and a cup of Irish tea, and spent 30 minutes coloring. By the time my bed-headed rugrats came down my head was clear and my markers were warmed up!

Orange Tumeric Smoothie

1 cup coconut milk

1 whole orange, peeled and roughly chopped

1 1″ piece of fresh ginger, peeled

1/2 teaspoon dried tumeric (fresh would probably be lovely, but I can’t always find it at the grocery store)

1 cup ice cubes

Combine everything in a blender and whir til smooth.

I find that if I can sneak downstairs to the kitchen without anybody waking up for a while, that too-early turns out to be just right! That smoothie looks terrific! I can’t wait for oranges to be in season!
