As I write about often, I really hate plastic. Not only is it horrible for the planet, but I believe plastic containers leach chemicals into the foods and drinks we consume. Quite simply, I avoid plastic whenever possible.
Lately, fears about the health effects of BPA have deterred many consumers from plastic. Manufacturers now proudly label products as “BPA free”. And, that’s great. But, I can’t help but wonder: what plastic ingredient will be next to strike fear among parents? BPA today – what’s tomorrow?
Our kids used BPA-free plastic cups and plates until very recently. Chris and I were feeling nervous about plastic, so when I learned about Duralex dishware from Mighty Nest I knew it was the right product for our family. Made in France, Duralex tempered glass is 2.5 times stronger than ordinary glass so it is chip-resistant and very kid-friendly. It is dishwasher safe, too.
Another bonus to switching to glass? It teaches kids from a very young age how to properly hold and care for their plates and cups. I notice that they are a bit more slow and careful when I serve them meals on Duralex plates. Little Vivian confidently brings a tiny Duralex cup to her mouth, smiling with pride. It makes her feel like a big girl!

I love Duralex! We use their glass cups with our toddler and skipped bottles/sippy cups entirely. They are really sturdy although when chucked directly at a ceramic tile floor, they will break! 🙂 Only one has broken, though, since she started using them about 6-8 months old. I am resisting the urge to tell Vivian in the last picture, “Two hands!”
