In just a few weeks, on April 22, the world will celebrate Earth Day. As a Homemade Mother I strive to teach my kids about taking care of our planet every day, a somewhat daunting mission with a 2 and 3 1/2 year old. They are careful to turn off lights, put trash in a garbage can and help with the recycling, but I am always seeking out ways to help them understand why we live the way we do.
So, this year I sought out several earth-themed books from Barefoot Books, a publisher with a mission to share stories that inspire children to explore, create and connect to the wonders of the world around them. Every book we have from Barefoot Books is colorful and vibrant and fresh, and I knew they’d be a good source for my Earth Day lessons with the kids.
Sure enough, the kids love the books we received! Evie’s far-and-away favorite is My Mama Earth, a beautifully illustrated tale of how mother nature creates and protects our wonderful planet. As soon as she saw it she wrote her name in it, and the next day she insisted on bringing it to school for show-&-tell. Her teacher said it was a great book to share with the class.
Mack took a liking to Over In the Meadow, a sweet book about animal families with a sing-along CD. He is quite fond of music and singing, and I catch him humming the tune quite often. I want him to develop an appreciation for nature and the environment.
I know my gentle reminders about the fragility of our beautiful planet are starting to settle into their growing brains. Today they helped my mom plant flowers at her house in the country, and as Mack tossed some dirt into the planter he told me he was “making a house for the flowers.” Perhaps he is starting to understand that the earth is home to more than just our little family. Awwwwwww!
Barefoot Books knows how much I love their titles, so they agreed to participate in a GIVEAWAY for one lucky Homemade Mothering reader. To enter, visit www.barefootbooks.com and check out their earth-themed books, and let me know which one you’d like in the comments below. Winner will be drawn at random on Wednesday, April 11 at 11:59 PM CST.
