Thank You, Veterans!

Every November 11 is an important day for our family.  Because Chris served in the Army for 4 years and was deployed to Fallujah, Iraq with the 82nd Airborne from 2003-2004, Veteran’s Day holds  extra special meaning. On this day I take a few moments to feel grateful for Chris’ safe return and to send some extra prayers of gratitude to the troops who didn’t make it home.

Our families have a proud military background.  My mom’s dad was a captain in the Marine Corps and served in Korea:

My dad’s dad (known to me as Papa) served in the Army, and during his service my grandma gave birth to my dad at a U.S. Army hospital on Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis:

Chris’ grandfather John bravely flew planes during World War II while serving with the Army Air Corps:

My beautiful niece Grace invited Chris to a special Veteran’s Day program at her elementary school on Friday. The kids sang patriotic songs and read inspiring quotes, and all the veterans stood on the stage to talk a little bit about their service.  It was a lovely way to honor real heroes.

To close the ceremony, the school’s music teacher read an excerpt from H is for Honor: A Military Family Alphabet.  I think I speak for everyone in the auditorium when I say that the quote gave me goosebumps:

Y is for the reason they do the things they do.

They put their lives on the line and they do it all for YOU.

For you to live a life that’s free in a nation proud and strong,

be glad there are those who go to work taking your dreams along.
