Making Memories in Wisconsin

We just returned from a wonderfully relaxing long weekend in Wisconsin.  My great aunt and uncle invited us to stay at their peaceful country house, so of course my little family took them up on such a generous offer.  When I was growing up, my grandparents had a weekend house on tiny Rice Lake, near Whitewater, Wisconsin. I have so many fond memories of that house and the quaint area surrounding it.  I want my kids to experience and enjoy the rural life whenever possible, too.

Chris and I took the kids for a ride on the East Troy Electric Railroad.  It was the same ride I took with my family 27 years ago, when my sister Meghan left her trusty blankie behind and my dad had to chase after the train for miles just to retrieve it.  Fortunately, we didn’t forget anything this time, but I loved treating my kids to a memory from my childhood. Its amazing how life can come full circle at the most unexpected moments.

While at a festival in Lake Geneva Chris took Evie for her first-ever spin on a Ferris wheel.  As soon as she saw the ride she just HAD to go.  I was so impressed by her bravery and enthusiasm.  She boarded without any hesitation, and every time she whirred past Mack and I waiting on the ground she waved and smiled, her curly blond hair blowing into soft tangles.

Of course Mack was a little jealous to miss out on all that fun, so I redirected him to the boats on the lake and spiders on the rocks.  He quickly regained his happy little smile.

Living in a big city, we tend to get caught up in the daily hustle and bustle. Sometimes I worry that I don’t take enough time to stop and enjoy this special, fleeting time we have as a young family.  Long weekends like this remind us why we are making so many sacrifices and working so hard every day.  My family is so precious. So special.  So important.  I never want to lose sight of that.

Maureen, I swear we live life on the same wavelength. For the past 15 years, through so many different life stages and milestones, we seem to always be thinking about and into the same things at the same time. I love your post and I’m having the same thoughts about my family every day. We are so lucky.

Love that you are enjoying your family and life! All to often I hear mothers complaints about children and what annoyances but time passes and then it’s too late to appreciate what you have. Yes, parenting is hard but soo worth it!
