Cloth Diapering on the Go

Anyone who reads this blog even semi-regularly probably knows I am a big believer in cloth diapers.  Not only are they better for the planet and healthier for my babies, but choosing cloth saves us THOUSANDS of dollars.  We are living on a pretty strict budget, and I can’t imagine where the money for disposable diapers would come from if I hadn’t chosen cloth when my daughter was first born three years ago.

With all that said, however, I do have a confession to make: whenever we travel away from home for more than a night or two I opt for disposables.  I have a few reasons for this – 1) I never know if the laundry situation at our destination will be cloth diaper-friendly, 2) now that we have to pay for checked bags on flights, I can’t justify paying to haul my cloth diapers and 3) traveling with kids is stressful, so opting for disposables is one less thing to think about.

But, I was feeling really, really bummed about this.  With every disposable diaper I tossed in the trash I felt a pang of guilt and sadness.  It just didn’t seem right for the planet to suffer just because I was on vacation.

So, I was thrilled when  given the chance to try out a hybrid diaper system from GroVia during our recent trip to Wisconsin.  The super cute reusable shells are lined with either a reusable cotton soaker pad (like a typical cloth diaper) or with a disposable GroVia BioSoaker.  Because we were on vacation, we chose to use the latter. The BioSoaker pad is made with biodegradable and compostable materials, so I felt a little less guilty tossing it in the trash.  And, it is safe for little Mack’s behind because it is free from fragrance, dyes, plastic and chlorine.  Plus, the shells are totally reusable, so the amount of waste is quite minimal when compared to a regular disposable diaper.

The GroVia Hybrid system was really easy to use – just lay out the shell, remove the sticky tabs from the BioSoaker pad and lay the pad into the shell.  Took no time at all, and Mack didn’t seem to notice the difference.  He ran after Evie like he always does!

Wonderful post! We use cloth for our 21-month-old (and have since his birth) but also use disposables on the road. Lately, we’ve been on the road a lot, and have been using way, way more disposable than I’m comfortable with. Will try these out instead!

We love the Flip system, we use a pre fold in it at home and a gdiaper disposable liner on the go.

We have a 3-4 days worth of flips and 3-4 days worth of grovia’s ybrids and i don’t use my flip covers EVER anymore. The grovia covers work great with my flip inserts and the grovia inserts. The grovia covers are just so much better!

These are my go-to for travel as well. You can’t beat a cloth diaper when it comes to avoiding blow outs and who wants a blow out while they are traveling! I also use just the shells when we go swimming. Much cuter and earth friendly than a disposable swimming diaper.
