Memories at The Music Box

I’m feeling a little anxious about Christmas. With six kids in a Chicago townhouse, we just don’t have any more room for any more stuff. I really do try to keep the gifts thoughtful and at a minimum, but even minimum x 6 = a lot. I hate that so much of this time of year centers around things. It just doesn’t seem right.

Every Advent Chris and I prefer to make memories with the kids rather than loading them up on more junk. We usually take a trip to Connecticut to visit family. And, we take full advantage of everything our fine city has to offer.

Take, for example, The Music Box Theater. I brought Evie and Vivian there last weekend for a matinee sing-along showing of the 1950’s classic “White Christmas,” and it was just the cutest way to spend a snowy Saturday afternoon in Chicago. The theater was packed with jolly moviegoers totally in the holiday spirit! Plenty of horrible Christmas sweaters, Santa hats askew and jingly bells. Before the show a classic Santa Claus, accompanied by an old-school organ, lead the jovial audience in Christmas carols. Impossible not to catch the spirit!

Evie and Vivian fell in love with the old theater. The authentic vintage details throughout bought us back to a simpler time when Christmas really was about family (and not the latest Black Friday deal). The three of us shared popcorn and Reeses Pieces, and after the show we ordered a late lunch at a nearby restaurant on bustling Southport Avenue. A perfect Christmas memory with my big girls.

The Music Box offers a double feature during the holiday season with “White Christmas” and “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Maybe next year I’ll bring the boys with me to make another fun memory!
